Crime 13/03/20 Why Konstantin Rokossovsky was released from prison in 1940

the Future Marshal, and in 1937 commander of the cavalry corps, Konstantin Rokossovsky was arrested on the denunciation of his superiors. And also of informers soon too “closed”. They were later shot as pests, and Rokossovsky was released after serving under investigation 2.5 years, and within months joined the highest leadership of the red army.

Someone, and that someone snitched?

in the Summer of 1937, Konstantin Rokossovsky commanded the 5th cavalry corps in the TRANS-Baikal military district. In early June, the Commissar of defense Klim Voroshilov from Zabvo commander of the corps commander Gryaznova and a member of the military Council of the district Commissioner corps Shestakova came a denunciation of Rokossovsky. The letter stated that Rokossovsky, a pole, ought to check his social origin. In addition, informants reported on the presence in the past of Konstantin Konstantinovich “thrust on overseas work.” Rokossovsky also attributed to the close relationship with the former head of the combat training of the red army K. A. Tchaikovsky who at the time of writing denunciation was already 2 weeks as arrested.

How did the subsequent events

Soon after receiving the denunciation of Konstantin Konstantinovich was suspended from command of the corps, at the end of June Rokossovsky was expelled from the party, and in July he was dismissed from the army “for office discrepancy”. In August of the same year the corps commander Rokossovsky was arrested and placed in the St. Petersburg “Crosses”.

what he was suspected and accused

Like most commanders of his rank (and not only them) who were arrested in the second half of the 1930-ies, Rokossovsky was accused of committing a crime under the notorious 58th article of treason. He Rokossovsky did not give up (at least this fact is nothing documented not confirmed and never been published with reference to the officialsources). But the corps commander of his former colleagues at that time already sitting in prison, demonized vengeance.
the Same K. A. Tchaikovsky, a former medic of the Transbaikal military district, with whom Konstantin had once been “closely”, said at the inquest that Rokossovsky as a cavalry division commander staged in their unit’s uniform lack of sanitation, military training was abandoned… Tchaikovsky joined in his testimony in the Trotskyist group, and Rokossovsky, and his chief-of donositeli Gryaznova.
planted by the time the ex-chief of staff Zabvo J. G. Rubies ranked Rokossovsky spies. In the end, it Gryaznov and Shestakov (both at that time were already sitting, and our testimony has contributed to the “Trotskyist” past Konstantin Konstantinovich) wanted to combine the then fashionable “Trotskyist bloc”, something like the current OCG, only with a political-terrorist bias.

Why was released, and not shot like the others?

There are numerous indications that Rokossovsky during the investigation, severely tortured, his teeth knocked out, broken ribs, crushed fingers with a hammer, repeatedly taken out “to be shot”. This was written and Solzhenitsyn, just in case started the presentation of this hypothesis with a cautious “they say…”.
Documentary and reliable data on the torture of the future Marshal in the investigation no. Rokossovsky himself never mentioned in his book “Soldier’s duty” the narrative begins immediately with the events of spring 1940, the year when Konstantin after two and a half years “vacationing with his family in Sochi” (by the way, until March 22, he still sat in prison).
When Rokossovsky was going to judge all who have it riveted, by that time it was shot. Someone said that the corps commander before the revolution was recruited by the spy A. Yushkevich, who escaped later in Poland. But it soon became clear: Yushkevich, heroically fought in the Civil war, killed at the storming of Perekop. The ConStanton K. nothing pleaded not guilty.
About the release of the defendant before Stalin sought Timoshenko. At the end of March 1940 Rokossovsky was released “with the termination of the case.” He was immediately restored in the party and in the post, the spring Konstantin spent with his family on vacation. And then, after spending some time in command positions in the cavalry, major-General Rokossovsky in November of the same year was appointed commander of the mechanized corps. In this capacity he met the Great Patriotic war.
