Short introduction

Sir Rod Stewart is one of the most successful singers worldwide. Over 150 million records sold made him a world star who also enjoyed great success in the United States. While his music was initially influenced by the blues, he later released many more catchy songs that opened up a wider audience. Nine of his studio albums alone reached number 1 on the British album charts.

Early life

The Scots son, born in London as the fifth child in the family, is the youngest child in the family. Born eight years after the fourth child in the family, he was the nestling of the family. Rod Stewart originally wanted to be a professional footballer. To date, he is a fervent supporter of the Scotland and Celtic Glasgow national teams. In addition to football, Al Jolson’s music was also very popular in the family. Stewart’s contact with rock’n’roll came when he first heard Little Richard’s hit “The Girl Can’t Help It” in 1956.

In 1959 his father gave him a guitar. From the mid to late 1960s, Rod Stewart began singing with various London bands, including Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions and the Jeff Beck Group and Faces. Rod Stewart quickly had his first successes as a solo artist, which made him a big star from the early 1970s. Previously, he had unsuccessfully participated in a trial training session at Brentford FC, a third division club. Before earning money from making music, he worked in various part-time jobs, such as cemetery gardener or sign maker, after he left school at the age of 15.

Career

His first solo album, “An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down”, was released when he had already made a name for himself through his participation in the aforementioned bands.

He finally achieved a breakthrough as a solo artist with the album “Every Picture Tells A Story”. For the first time, an artist managed to be number 1 on the charts with a single in the United States and Great Britain.

A lifelong successful career as a solo artist followed. In 1975 Rod Stewart i moved to the USA, where he was also established. In the following decades, he should be able to land hit singles again and again and consequently he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

But as if that weren’t enough, he always managed to meet the tastes of his fans or win new ones in the new millennium. In 2004, after a 25-year hiatus, he had another No. 1 album in the US with “Stardust: the Great American Songbook”. And even in the present, despite some limitations (see below), he never tires of releasing – and continuing to be successful – records. Incidentally, his great love of football did not suffer during this time. When Celtic won the Scottish Cup in 2015, he was able to present it to the team. Rod Stewart also likes to collect sports cars.

In his solo career, Rod Stewart completed a total of 30 major tours between 1977 and 2019, whereby his current one (as of 2019) is still ongoing.

Career highlights

Given the multitude of his great commercial successes as a solo artist, it is almost impossible to pick out a few highlights. His first # 1 album was “Every Picture Tells A Story” in 1971, his last “Blood Red Roses” in 2018.

His first # 1 single was “Reason to Believe” in 1971, his last widely successful single was “All for Love” in a duet with Bryan Adams and Sting in 1993. At least in the UK, he achieved with the Charity Sinlgle “Everybody Hurts” again number 1 on the charts in 2010.

His hit “Sailing” from 1975 may have been the highlight of his career, at least in German-speaking countries, but as mentioned, he was a successful artist worldwide.
