Another 15/03/20 Otto Yon: why do KGB agents kidnapped the head of counterintelligence Germany
German lawyer and politician Otto Yon went down in history as one of the conspirators who tried to eliminate Hitler in 1944. However, even more interesting in the biography of Yona episode, just descended from the pages of spy novels — his mysterious appearance in the USSR in 1954.
Enemy of the Fuhrer
Otto Yon, in his youth sympathized with the socialists, the Second world war he worked as a legal counsel, “Lufthansa”, and in 1942 became the head of the representative office of the airline in neutral Madrid. By this time he already had connections with the conspirators were preparing an overthrow of Hitler. Working abroad, Jon has provided communication of the German Resistance with foreign intelligence services. On the day the officer failed coup of 20 July 1944, John was in Berlin, but direct participation in the events was not accepted. However, the Gestapo soon came on his trail and to not be arrested, the lawyer fled to Portugal and then to Britain. After the war, John as a translator for the British side participated in the Nuremberg trials. And in 1950 under the patronage of London, he headed the newly created Federal service for the protection of the Constitution of Germany, is engaged in providing security and fighting political extremism (counterintelligence Germany).
Stolen
In 1954, the West German Newspapers were full of sensational headlines: dear Dr. Otto John fled to Germany, taking with him the secrets of his intelligence.
Outwardly, the thing really looked like a betrayal of the Motherland, the more that Jon did not stay in East Berlin and got to Moscow.
And only decades later it became clear that Jon had apparently had no other choice — he was the victim of the operation, brilliantly planned and carried out by Soviet and East German agents.
the KGB long ago figureI Jon as a man sympathetic to the “left” of the idea of unification of Germany and ladiva with supporters of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. However, Colonel Vadim Kuchin, who was responsible for the rapid development of Jona, acted with caution, as suspected “ward” in the British secret service. Communication with Jon Soviets had established through his old friend Wolfgang Wohlgemuth.
July 20, 1954 John arrived in Berlin to participate in the 10-year anniversary of the failed plot. What happened next is the subject of endless disputes. Many researchers believe that Jon voluntarily went with Wohlgemuth in the Eastern part of the city to meet with representatives of the USSR and discussion of “collective action against the Nazis in Germany”, but was forcibly detained. Even more interesting is the version of Valentin Falin, the Soviet Ambassador in Bonn. He claimed that he met with Jon the KGB agent drugged him, and in an unconsciousness was taken to East Berlin. Jon himself later said was under the influence of drugs.
Berlin – Moscow – Bonn
anyway, Jon took control of the secret services of the Soviet bloc. He needed them as a person who would publicly “exposed the dominance of the Nazis” in the West German leadership.
“Fearing for his safety and life, John spoke at the artfully staged by the East advocacy event against the policies of Adenauer. But he did not give any state secrets,” — said the candidate of historical Sciences Boris Havkin, spoken by Otto Jon in 1996.
a month after the kidnapping, President of the Federal office for the protection of the Constitution, a special flight was taken to Moscow where he was interrogated by the KGB.
Interest in Jon gradually faded, and on 12 December 1955 he was able to secretly move from East Berlin to West Berlin.
But the West Germans did not believe in the innocence of Jon, and that his actions were imposed staged. The public of Germany turned away from Yona — too tageliki gave the country the consequences of his missteps (“escape” of the head of the security services have caused an acute political crisis). In Germany for treason Jon was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. To achieve rehabilitation, he could not until his death in 1997.
