Michael Jordan gave basketball a new popularity in the 1990s and generated billions of dollars in sales. He is said to be the best basketball player ever. Jordan resigned from basketball several times and played golf and baseball in between. However, he always returned to “his” sport.
Early life
Michael Jordan was born in New York, more precisely in Brooklyn. However, he grew up with his four siblings in a small town in North Carolina. The working class family did not offer a luxurious environment to grow up in. His father urged him to work hard and not to hang out in the street and get into bad company.
His father recognized his son’s talent early on. He encouraged him to train and at the age of ten Micheal was trained by a professional trainer. In 10th grade, however, he failed to join the Laney High School basketball team. However, he was not discouraged, trained hard and was accepted into the team the following year.
The success of his hard training was not long in coming. Talent scouts soon became aware of him. As was customary in America, he was quickly offered various sports grants. In 1981 he decided to go to the University of North Carolina. There he was able to draw attention to himself in the first year and secure his place in the core team.
Under the coach Dean Smith, Michael Jordan developed into a top performer of the team. He achieved outstanding individual performances, but could not make a decisive contribution to the rise of his team Tar Heels. After these experiences in the junior season, Michael Jordan was able to gain a foothold as an NBA draft. The previously unsuccessful Club Chicago Bulls added him to his team. This laid the cornerstone of his NBA career.
Career
In the first season, Michael Jordan was already the “Rookie of the Year”, newcomer of the year. With his outstanding performances, he managed to play his club in the playoffs. However, they could not assert themselves there this year. After a serious injury, Micheal Jordan was unable to play for most of the second season. However, when he returned to the field, he played his team again in the playoffs. Again they lost in the first round. In this game, Jordan also set the record for playoff points in a game with 63 points.
The next season was even more successful. Jordan scored over 3000 points. He topped the NBA’s top scorer list. However, the Chicago Bulls’ overall performance was not as successful. However, in 1988 Jordan was voted the NBA’s “Most Valuable Player”. In the same year Jordan won the title of the NBA All-Star-Game and the Slam Dunk Contest for the second time. His spectacular manner and style of playing on the basket earned him the nicknames “Air Jordan” and “His Airness”.
The income from advertising contracts, especially with his outfitter Nike, brought Michael Jordan large sums. The “Air Jordan” shoe line, named after its nickname, is still released annually and is a globally successful sports shoe line.
Jordan was able to build on his successes in the early 1990s. Numerous records lined his athletic career. In 1991, the Chicago Bulls’ longed-for success finally came and they won the championship for themselves.
The Bulls won the championship again in 1993, and Michael Jordan played a key role in the success here too.
After this success, Jordan announced his exit from professional basketball. He wanted to fulfill his father’s dream and become a baseball professional. In the following years he was active as a baseball player, but with rather moderate success.
After this brief interlude, in 1995 he announced his return to the Chicago Bulls and basketball with the short words “I’m back”. Other titles and successes followed.
In 1995 he retired from professional sports again. As manager of the Washington Wizards, however, he remained loyal to basketball. With this team Michael Jordan returned to basketball for the seasons 2001-2003. At the age of 40, he finally resigned.
He donated his $ 1 million annual salary to the survivors of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
