Some describe pop songs as superficial and only concerned with commerce. Two well-known representatives of the genre hold against it: Lena and Mark Forster.
Singer Lena Meyer-Landrut (28) is not concerned with general criticism of German pop music. “It doesn’t bother me. I generally don’t want to waste my time on things that I can’t change, “said Meyer-Landrut (” Better “) of the German Press Agency. “I am a pop singer because I feel that I enjoy it the most.”
“Soulless Commercial Poop”
Again and again critics and fans of other genres classify the lyrics of pop songs as superficial. The satirist Jan Böhmermann even spoke of “soulless commercial shit” in 2017. “Pop has a different function than other musical styles,” said songwriter Mark Forster (37, “194 countries”). Pop songs would accompany people the most in their everyday life, for example on the radio. “Other genres, on the other hand, are very much about the attitude of the scene, you feel more connected to each other.”
He also likes to listen to other styles of music, such as hip hop. But: “I feel comfortable in my little pop world, because it is a genre of music that is open and honest and can use something in all other genres.”
Meyer-Landrut and Forster are currently the most successful German pop musicians. In the animated film “Trolls World Tour”, which deals with the peaceful coexistence of several musical worlds, they lend their voices to the pop trolls Poppy and Branch. Because of the Corona crisis, the film does not run in cinemas, but can be borrowed on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime or Sky. (dpa / KT)
