Short introduction

KSI, whose real name is Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, is a British YouTuber. He gained fame through his videos about the FIFA and Grand Theft Auto games. In addition, he built up a career as a rap musician on YouTube. He caused a sensation with a series of boxing matches, including two fights against the well-known YouTuber Logan Paul.

Early life

Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji was born in London on June 19, 1993. He grew up in Watford and attended Berkhamsted School. There he got to know Simon Minter, with which KSI, together with other YouTubers, was to found the YouTube collective Sidemen. KSI opened its first YouTube account in 2008 under the name JideJunior. A year later he opened his current main channel under the name KSIOlajideBT, which he later shortened to KSI. After completing sixth grade, he left school to focus on his YouTube career. At that point, he was already earning around £ 1,500 a month on YouTube.

Career

At the beginning of his career, KSI focused on Let’s Plays and commentary videos from games in the FIFA series. This enabled him to gather a follower community of around 20,000 people. After a while he expanded his content to include videos about other games such as Grand Theft Auto V. He also regularly added vlogs in which he talked about himself and his life. As a result, the popularity of his channel grew rapidly and reached over 1 million subscribers in 2012.

KSI was involved in two controversies between 2012 and 2013 in which he was criticized for inappropriate jokes. As a result, he was excluded from all future events of the video game magazine Eurogamer and his advertising partner Microsoft separated from him. However, this did not detract from KSI’s popularity. In October 2013 he signed a contract with Maker Videos and was also involved in the creation of the YouTube collective Sidemen. Sidemen consists of seven British YouTubers and regularly publishes videos with different content.

KSI had previously experimented with his own rap songs on his channel. In 2015 he released his first real song and reached number 30 in the UK Singles Charts. In the same year he published his own book and published another book together with the Sidemen the following year. In 2017 there was allegedly a break between KSI and the other Sidemen members. A series of rap songs followed, in which KSI and the other members hostiled each other. It later turned out that although there were disagreements, much of the public struggle was show. The group continued to work together.

After another online controversy, KSI and British YouTuber Joe Weller agreed on a so-called white-collar amateur boxing match. KSI won the fight with a technical knockout. With 25 million views on YouTube, it was the most viewed white-collar amateur boxing match in history. Inspired by the success of the format, KSI publicly challenged the well-known American YouTuber Logan Paul to a fight. The fight took place with great public attention and ended in a tie. Then there was a rematch between the two in 2019, which this time was carried out as a professional boxing match and contained an undercard from various other professional boxing matches. KSI was able to win.

In addition to his YouTube videos and boxing matches, KSI continued to work on his career as a rapper. Among other things, he published his own album in collaboration with various musicians in 2019, which reached number 1 on the UK R&B album charts.

KSI’s estimated net worth is currently around EUR 18 million. His main sources of income are his YouTube channel, which now has almost 21 million subscribers, as well as his music albums and advertising partnerships.
