Early life

Hugo Egon Balder was born on March 22, 1950 in West Berlin, the son of Egon Friedrich and Gerda Balder. Hugo’s mother Gerda was a Jew and survived a stay in Theresienstadt concentration camp. Her first husband Walter Leyerson was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Hugo Egon Balder grew up in the Friedenau district of Berlin on Semperstrasse. At the age of four he took piano lessons and then learned to play the drums. In his youth he was active as a drummer in the bands “The Ears” and “Birth Control”. After finishing school, Balder studied art and graphics before attending Else Bongers’ private drama school in Berlin from 1973 to 1976. Hugo Egon Balder was very active musically in his young years before he discovered the art of acting for himself. In 1985 he joined the ensemble of the Düsseldorf cabaret “Kom (m) ödchen”, where he designed the program together with Harald Schmidt. In addition, he made a living as a pop singer and released his single “Erna”, which even achieved its first commercial success in November 1984. Balder married for the first time in the 1980s. In 1990 he was in love with a French woman for two years and with a Cologne woman from 1993 to 1998.

Career

Balder gained his first experience as a presenter in the radio area on the radio station “Radio Luxemburg”. The show “Meal”, on which he had some sketches and cabaret appearances, soon became a great success. From 1984, Balder was then regularly seen on the RTL television station. There he was in the well-known programs “Nothing at all, right ?!” and “Tutti Frutti” present, which brought him great media attention. As a producer, he also worked on the programs “April April” with Frank Elstner and the cult format “RTL Saturday Night”, which was broadcast from 1993 to 1998. His debut as a director followed in 1997 with the film “Silvia’s Belly – 2 Men and (k) a Baby”. From 2003, Balder was represented on the Sat.1 channel. There he produced and moderated the successful quiz format “Genial beseben – die Comedyarena” and was also active as a moderator in the chart and music show “Die Hit-Giganten”. In collaboration with Hella von Sinnen, Balder moderated many other TV formats on the station, such as “Celebrity don’t annoy you”, “Now you poke”, “Now soaping” and “Now it’s the hype”. Since 2016, Balder has been on the radio every day in his program “Hugo Egon Balders Zeitmaschine – die stories behind the songs” on the radio station “Radio Eins”. As an actor, he was seen in one episode of the crime scene each in 1992 and 2009. In an episode of the ZDF series “Wilsberg” with the title “Fresh Meat”, Balder also had a major role in 2011. Since 2017, he has been a moderator in the new edition of his famous show “Genial daneben” alongside Hella von Sinnen to see.

Amazing facts

The reason for the exchange of his first and second name lies with a record company. In the 1970s, this suggested that he swap the two names, as this would sound better. In 1973, however, he released his first single under the name “Egon Balder”.
