Early life

In 1987 Dennis Aogo was born in Karlsruhe, the son of a German mother and a father from Nigeria. He grew up in the district of Oberreuth. His first club was Bulacher SC at the age of 6. From there he changed to Karlsruher SC after only one year. By the year 2000 he had developed so well that he first switched to the youth of SV Waldhof Mannheim and later to that of Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. Here he spent the last two seasons in youth football before playing for SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga from 2004, starting his career, which continues to this day.

Career

Dennis Aogo made his Bundesliga debut in October 2004. There followed a total of 94 appearances for the Badeners, in which he, as a defensive player, achieved the strong value of 11 goals scored.

In 2008 he moved to Hamburger SV, where he was able to participate in the UEFA Cup several times. Before that, he had already played a number of times as a junior international during his youth. This was a total of 53 missions from the U16 to the U21, in which he even scored 8 goals.

The highlight of this phase was in his time at Hamburger SV winning the European U21 Junior Championship. Here he played alongside later world champions such as Mesut Özil or Sami Khedira as regular players in this successfully completed tournament.

Things were still going well for Hamburger SV at that time. At that time, you were often among the top teams in the Bundesliga, very often with the support of Dennis Aogo. However, his engagement should come to an end after five years. Overall, he had stood 131 times in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV on his subsequent move to FC Schalke 04.

Shortly after moving to the Ruhr area, he contracted a cruciate ligament rupture during training and had to pause the rest of the season. Later he also took part in the Champions League with FC Schalke 04, where Dennis Aogo also played. Nevertheless, he was increasingly demoted from the regular player to a supplementary player. Especially since André Breitenreiter took over Schalke in the 2015/16 season, he has only been used sporadically. His overall record is only 65 league games in his four seasons at Schalke 04.

Finally he moved to VfB Stuttgart. In its first season there, VfB Stuttgart took a very good 7th place. The following year, however, the club relegated to 1. Bundesliga in the relegation against 1. FC Union Berlin. Dennis Aogo also followed this path, but not with his previous club. In the summer of 2019, he signed with Hannover 96 who relegated to relegation, who would like to get back on board immediately, but it doesn’t look like it. In addition, Dennis Aogo has not yet established himself as a regular player in his new club.

Dennis Aogo made his debut in the senior national team of Jogi Löw in May 2010 and, as mentioned, then took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Here, however, he was only used in the game for third place. After his last international match in June 2013, he was no longer nominated, which means that his career in the national team can be considered over.

Career highlights

Internationally, his greatest success was participation in the 2010 World Cup and the 3rd place achieved with the German national team. With the U21 juniors, he had even become European champion a year earlier. Dennis Aogo has not yet won any titles in club football, which is why reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with Hamburger SV in the 2009/10 season is a highlight.
