Short introduction
Christian Rach is a German television cook and cookbook author, who became internationally known with his television program “Rach der Restauranttester” on RTL. Rach currently lives in Hamburg and is extremely committed to volunteering. Among other things, he works in cooperation with the WWF against food waste and is an ambassador for the children’s hospice in Central Germany, which is committed to terminally ill children and their families.
Early life
Christian Rach was born in 1957 in St. Ingbert in Saarland as the son of an electrical engineer and a housewife. He grew up in his place of birth and after passing his Abitur he moved to the city of Hamburg to study philosophy and mathematics from 1978 to 1983. During her studies, Rach also worked as a waiter. During his part-time job, he discovered his passion for cooking. From this point on he worked as a cook alongside his studies in the beach yard with Uwe Witzke. He broke off his studies shortly before his exam because he got a job offer as a chef in a French star restaurant. In 1983 Rach worked in Grenoble with Philippe Boissou and the following year as sous-chef in the parade in Vienna. The latter job gave Rach interesting insights into creative, classic cuisine.
In 1986 Christian Rach moved back to Hamburg, where he opened the Leopold restaurant in the Altona district. 3 years later, together with Robert Wullkopf, he opened the table house near the Altona port. Another branch of the Tafelhaus has regularly received a Michelin star and other awards since 1991. However, the table house was closed in 2001.
Career highlights
In 2005, Rach appeared for the first time on television in the RTL program “In Teufels Küche”. There he led a crew of celebrities with whom he cooked.
Rach operated the Lucifer snack bar and the Engel restaurant from 1997 to 2001 and ensured the current level of awareness. The “Darling Harbor” restaurant, which he also opened in 2001, had to close again after three years. According to Rach’s statement, the modern concept was not adopted as hoped, which prevented customers.
In 2005 he also started his best-known RTL program “Rach the restaurant tester”, in which he helped restaurants out of emergency situations by giving them tips and assistance with corporate management and food preparation. In 2017, some new episodes of the show appeared before it was discontinued. The TV format was awarded the Bavarian TV Prize in 2009 and the German TV Prize for best docutainment in 2010 as well as the golden camera. In the same year, Christian Rach also received the 2010 media award for German medium-sized companies from the “markt intern” publishing group. In 2009 Christian Rach took over the restaurant “Das kleine rote” in the Bahrenfeld district of Hamburg together with a business partner and turned it into a luxurious steak house called “Rach & Ritchy”. Despite the great success of the restaurant, it will close at the end of the year due to a lack of staff.

Rach accidentally saved a woman’s life a few years ago. When he heard the screams of a woman walking his dog in the Sternenschanze park, he went into the matter. When he found a bloodstained woman lying on the floor, who was being hit with multiple kicks by an unknown man, Rach fled the attacker with his dog leash and his dog, which bared its teeth before the attacker. Rach then drove the seriously injured woman to the hospital herself and was thus able to prevent worse.
