As soon as the Corona restrictions were relaxed a little, many Germans made their way to the Baltic Sea on Pentecost weekend. Next weekend, however, traffic chaos threatens on the way to the sea. Because then the A1 will be completely blocked over the weekend near Hamburg.

As the authorities announced today, the A1 Bremen-Lübeck will remain completely closed the following weekend (June 6th / 7th) due to bridge construction work between Hamburg-Moorfleet and Billstedt. The block begins on Saturday, June 6th, around 8:00 a.m. and ends on Monday, June 8th, around 5:00 a.m. early in the morning. Because of the weekend traffic to the sea, the planners expect severe impairments to traffic. The A1 is one of the most important routes to the beaches of the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. That is why the spokesman for the Autobahn branch, Christian Merl, is already calling for postponing trips that are not absolutely necessary to other dates. So far it is planned to redirect traffic locally. For many drivers, the A7 might be an alternative. However, traffic congestion will probably also occur on this route at the Elbtunnel in Hamburg.

The current bridge construction work has become necessary because the two bridges over the A1 of the federal highway B5 have to be completely renewed. The structures built in 1956 are now completely devoured by concrete cancer. While the southern bridge was demolished a year ago, traffic has continued over the other bridge since then. Work on the new bridge has now progressed to such an extent that the beams, which weigh around 30 tons and are 22 meters long, can be used for the new bridges using a large crane. The first of the two bridges will then be inaugurated at the end of the year. The northern flyover is then to be demolished and rebuilt. The construction work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
