Early life

Born in Kolbermoor in Upper Bavaria in 1984, he started playing football with the neighboring club FV Oberaudorf in his early youth. He was also an avid skier when he was young. In 1992 he moved from Oberaudorf to TSV 1860 Rosenheim, rather he played in the youth team of FC Bayern Munich from 1998. In 2002 his career as a professional soccer player began in this club. He had already finished his school career there with a secondary school certificate at a secondary school in Munich and completed an apprenticeship as an office clerk.

Career

An entry into this profession was no longer necessary since he received his first professional contract in 2002. He was also rewarded with his debut as a professional footballer in November 2002 when he came on for Mehmet Scholl in the Champions League. A few days later, Bastian Schweinsteiger also made his debut in the Bundesliga. He scored his first goals as a professional in February 2003 in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Köln when he scored twice in the 8-0 win.

In 2008 he received the captain’s armband at his club in one game for the first time in the absence of Oliver Kahn. While he was mainly used on the left side in midfield in the 2000s, his new coach Louis van Gaal moved him into the middle of the field for the first time in his time. From then on he was placed in the central defensive midfield of FC Bayern Munich.

In 2011 his eternal companion at FC Bayern, Philipp Lahm, captain of the team, Bastian Schweinsteiger became his vice. In the national team, too, the two formed the core of the team that finally chose itself to be the world’s best national team in 2014 by winning the very competitive final 1-0 against Argentina.

Bastian Schweinsteiger took part in the European Championship in France again in 2016, but was in debt in the semi-final against France, whereupon the German team retired. Schweinsteiger took his leave both in the national team and some time before at Bayern. He left this for Manchester United, where he was used only sporadically. After three seasons with Chicago Fire, in which he also remained untitled, he finally ended his active career.

Career highlights

The biggest highlight of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s career was undoubtedly winning the World Cup at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the final he fought for victory over 120 minutes of play despite a laceration on his forehead and – although Philipp Lahm actually held this position – was considered the secret captain of the winning team.

Another highlight was, in addition to his numerous German championships and victories in the DFB Cup, winning the Champions League in the Wembley final in 2013 after losing the final of this competition in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

The highlight of his numerous individual awards was the election for Germany’s soccer player of the year 2013.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is also a big basketball fan. During his time in Munich, he often visited the basketball games in his own department. Even during his time in the USA, he was often seen as a spectator at NBA basketball games. Bastian Schweinsteiger has been married to Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanovic since 2016, with whom he has two sons.
