Early life

Oliver Geissen was born on August 21, 1969 in Hamburg to a fishmonger from Berlin. After graduating from high school at Goethe-Gymnasium in Hamburg, he joined the Bundeswehr in 1988. Geissen played American football before his television career from 1992 to 1993 and was used as a kicker for the Hamburg Blue Devils. He also played football in the Hamburg Oberliga for SV West-Eimsbüttel, 1. SC Norderstedt and SV Lurup. With increasing interest, Oliver Geissen more or less slipped into the moderator’s existence. He gained his first experience in moderation at the private radio station OK Radio in Hamburg, which made him well known for the first time in his hometown of Hamburg. Oliver Geissen volunteered as a moderator and editor for the radio station and was then hired. However, Geissen ended the employment after a while and turned to other plans. He wanted more: he wanted to be on TV.

Career

In 1994 Geissen started at ZDF, where he moderated various TV programs until 1998. This includes the show “X-Trem”, for which he appeared on television for the first time. From 1995, Geissen was employed by the local TV station Hamburg 1 as head of the sports department, where he moderated the sports magazine “Rasant” every week. In 1997 he ended the line and switched to the TV station RTL.

At the beginning RTL got its own talk show, which was known under the name “The Oliver Geissen Show”. The show ran from 1999 to 2009. He then moderated RTL’s Saturday evening shows at regular intervals.

Over the years, Oliver Geissen moderated many other TV formats. He was, among other things, moderator of “Top of the Pops”, “The 80s Show”, “The 90s Show”, “The 20s Show” and “The Ultimate Chart Show”. In addition, he hosted the live broadcast “Guinness World Records – The Greatest World Records” from 2005 to 2008, from 2011 to 2013 “There can only be E1NEN” and in 2019 the anniversary show celebrating RTL’s 25th anniversary. In January 2015, Geissen took over Daniel Hartwich’s moderator position for the “RTL Comedy Grand Prix”. Since October 2016 he has also been running the game show classic “Ruck Zuck” as a new edition on RTLplus and “The Big Music Quiz” as well as “LEGO Master” on RTL.

Oliver Geissen made his breakthrough as a presenter in 2000 when he moderated Big Brother’s second season. He also set another major milestone for his career with his moderation at the casting show DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar), whose event shows were accompanied by seasons 12 and 13 and themed shows from seasons 14 and 15.

Not visible from the outside at first glance, Oliver Geissen achieved another highlight of his career with Norddeich TV. This is a production company that Geissen founded in 2004 and which is a joint project between him and RTL. Another managing director is his old colleague Ollie Weiberg, whom he knows from his previous job at Hamburg 1. “The Oliver Geissen Show” came out of Norddeich TV.

Furthermore, Oliver Geissen stated in the interview that he is no longer interested in working as a radio presenter. It would no longer irritate him.

Amazing facts

Oliver Geissen is known to the public for being a very changeable moderator who can be used for any format. Nevertheless, in the past he occasionally made comments on candidates or other attendees at shows, which the press has torn apart. Therefore none other than DSDS juror and sharp-tongued Dieter Bohlen developed an aversion to Oliver Geissen. Bohlen describes Geissen as a “small, devious hamster” and even incites the TV station RTL against him. To the outside, however, goat behaves as if both understand each other very well.

What few people know about Oliver Geissen is his work as a fire brigade in northern Germany. Furthermore, Geissen has a tattoo on her arm, which stretches from the shoulder to his elbow. The tattoo first appeared on his 50th birthday on an excursion in Sylt.

Oliver Geissen is today married to Christina Plate, with whom he has three sons. One of his sons imitated Geissen with his enthusiasm for sports and played football in Hamburg’s senior youth division.
