Gustav Elijah Ar (November 1, 1996, Allentown), better known by the stage name Lil Peep (stylized as LiL PEEP. Usually referred to simply as Peep) – American rapper, singer, songwriter and model. He was known as one of the first post-emo revival musicians and his hip-hop style became known as emo rap.

Early life

Lil Peep was born in Allentown, PA, USA and grew up in Long Island, New York. Lil Peep released music on Soundcloud in 2014 under the pseudonym Lil Peep because his mother called him “Peep” as a child. He soon became popular on Soundcloud after releasing several mixtapes and collaborating with Lil Tracy. On August 15, 2017, he needed his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober out. Lil Peep reached the highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 with the title “Falling Down” by XXXTentacion in October 2018 – he reached the 13th place. The single was awarded gold on November 8, 2018 by the American Recording Association (RIAA). This was Lil Peep’s first gold certification. His second studio album, Come Over When You’re Sober, was released posthumously on November 9, 2018 and debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and became his first album in the top 10 of the US album charts.

Lil Peep was a frequent drug user due to mental health issues that led to his death on November 15, 2017. The Pima County Medical Expert’s Office confirmed that an accidental overdose of Fentanyl-Xanax was the cause of death.

Career

Gustav Elijah Ar was born in Pennsylvania and grew up on the south coast of Long Island. His parents were Harvard graduates; They divorced when Gustav was still a teenager. His father worked as a college professor and his mother worked as a primary school teacher. After dropping out of school, he graduated from school with the help of online courses. He soon became interested in music and began publishing it on YouTube and Soundcloud.

At 17, Gustav moved to Los Angeles, where he lived with his childhood friend, Brennan Savage, in a rented apartment to work on his musical career. The founder of the music group SchemaPosse, rapper JGRXXN, contacts Lil Peep and Ghostemane via social networks and points out the talent of the young people. After a personal meeting, the performers invented the band SchemaBoyss and successfully toured the USA. However, due to creative differences, both Lil Peep and Ghostemane soon left SchemaPosse.

After leaving SchemaPosse and meeting Lil Tracy and other members of the emo trap band GothBoiClique, Gus joined them. Literally in a year, Lil Peep brought the combination of emo and rap to a world level.

In 2015 Lil Peep released his first mixtape “Lil Peep; Part One ”, which was viewed 4,000 times on Soundcloud in its first week. Soon after, he released the Feelz mini album and another mixtape, “Live Forever”.

In May 2017, Mineral accused Lil Peep of a copyright infringement: The track “Hollywood Dreaming” played with the musician Gab3 contained an unlicensed and non-accredited sample of the song “LoveLetterTypewriter” from Mineral’s 1998 album “EndSerenading”. In response to these claims, Gab3 noted that they were only trying to show love for the original composition.

On June 2, 2017, Lil Peep announced the release of his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober on Instagram. The album was released on August 15th. The Autumn Come Over When You’re Sober tour to support the album started on October 2 and was scheduled to end on November 16, 2017, but Gustav died on November 15.

Posthumous publications

On January 11, 2018 Marshmello uploaded the single “Spotlight” to his channel, on which he worked with Gustav. A video was also uploaded on February 12, 2018 – also on the Marshmello Channel.

On March 1, 2018, producer Lil Peep announced on his Instagram account that he was finishing work on part 2 of the Come Over When You’re Sober album: “I’m finishing the second part. I love you, Gus, I know that you are here next to me. Best friends forever, trust me. ”

Lil Peep is referred to as a “Soundcloud rapper” and his style of music is referred to as “low-fired” rap and e-rap. Gustav’s music is based on both southern rap and post-hardcore.

Gustav’s music takes up lyrical themes: rejection by society, depression, drug addiction, previous relationships and separation. In his early work, he often dealt with witchcraft and occultism. The music magazine Pitchfork described Gustav as “the emo of the future”. His musical influences include Gucci Mane, Max B, Riff Raff, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kristallburgen, Seshollowaterboyz (including BONES and Rozz Dyliams), My Chemical Romance and Panic! At the disco.
