Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez (born February 3, 1977 in San Juan, Puerto Rico), better known as Daddy Yankee, is a Puerto Rican singer, actor, and music producer. One of the best known representatives of the reggaeton style.
Early life
Ramon was born in the city of San Juan in Puerto Rico. When he was young, he dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but due to a leg injury, he decided to devote his life to his other hobby of music.
He initially signed with DJ Playero, but has also worked with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Nicky Jam, Pitbull, Mey Vidal, DJ Blass, Eric DJ, Eliel, Nas, Tony Touch or members of the G-Unit, Lloyd Banks and Young Buck.
He married Miredis González at the age of 17 and they currently have two children: daughter Jessalis and son Jeremy. The singer also has an illegitimate daughter, Jamelette. His song Impacto, released on Cartel: The Big Boss in 2007, appears on the San Juan Sounds playlist in Grand Theft Auto IV. In the video game Grand Theft Auto IV, Daddy Yankee broadcasts his voice to San Juan Sounds radio station, where he acts as the DJ of this reggeton station. The Impacto Song also appears. In 2008 Ayala participated in a campaign to promote voting in the 2008 Puerto Rico general election. This initiative included a concert entitled “Vota o quédate callado” (vote or silence).
On August 25, 2008, Ayala approved Republican John McCain’s candidacy as President of the United States in the 2008 elections, declaring McCain to be a “fighter for the Hispanic community.” As part of this campaign, Ayala hosted a debate entitled “Vota o quédate callado: Los Candidatos Responden a Los Jóvenes”, which aired on October 9, 2008.
