In the Soviet Union, the entire planet was divided into two warring political camps: socialist and capitalist. Of course, there were people who were dissatisfied with the place in which they found themselves by fate. Fled at the time, and from the Soviet Union. the Killer Kennedy
One of the strangest and most famous defectors in the history of the USSR is Lee Harvey Oswald. At the age of twenty years, a young American, disillusioned with the Western way of life, through the UK, then Finland fled to the Soviet Union. However, Moscow does not believe in the sincerity of the former marine and grant Soviet citizenship was denied. In response, Oswald slit his wrists and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. After discharge the young man in exchange for a Soviet passport, has publicly renounced his American citizenship in what in 1959 reported with regret the Agency “associated press”. Oddly enough, he was released. But as soon as he found himself in America, he was immediately arrested as the alleged killer of John Kennedy. And during transportation from the police in prison, he was shot by night club owner. Obviously, the real killers of the President of the United States, thus covering their tracks. If I knew the double turncoat that he his return home, he certainly would prefer to stay in the USSR.
Acting dynasty
At least a known defector became the participant popular in the United States Negro theater company, James Hughes, who asked in 1932 the citizenship of the USSR. The artist was welcomed with open arms. As a native English speaker Hughes immediately identified the job of a radio announcer, in the Department responsible for broadcasting in North America. Subsequently, marrying a Ukrainian artist, James Hughes went to the Moscow film Studio. But millions of Soviet citizens remembered not himself, James Hughes, and his son Jim, who played charming the Negro in the popular movie of the thirties – “the Circus”. The artist died in March of 1942, and his son has lived all his life in the Soviet Union, leaving our country very old in 1994.
a Failed agent
Among the many defectors stands as a separate line to mention double agents of the intelligence services, fearing exposure, changed residence, moving to the country, which previously provided confidential service. One of the most prominent representatives of this category of defectors is Edward Lee Howard. In the US, he worked for the CIA, but then the scandal was fired for drug abuse. On interrogation he stated that Edward Lee Howard for many years was a Soviet spy in the ranks of the CIA. Obviously, Howard was expecting something similar. In 1995 he published a memoir in which he admitted that he was ready to make a deal with the CIA, but fled, fearing that former colleagues with him won’t even talk. In 2002, under strange circumstances, the defector died in Russia at his dacha, as if breaking his neck.
Scientists we need
However, not all internally defectors from the former recruited agents later regret the act. Howard, by and large, were not needed, neither the US nor the USSR. An entirely different matter from people like Joel Barr, who was one of the leading scientific employees of the Western Electric company and regularly supplied the Soviet Union with valuable information, scientific and technical nature. But soon after the United States exposed and arrested a couple of the Rosenbergs, he decided to escape to Czechoslovakia. On neutral territory he changed his name, becoming Joseph Berg, and in 1956 moved to the Soviet Union. Considering his former achievements, the scout might not work. However, Berg has provided substantial assistance to the Soviet scientists in the development of the domestic microelectronics industry. Thanks to his efforts, there appeared the country’s first desktop computer UM-1, for which the former spy received the State prize of the USSR. Eminent scientist died in Moscow in 1998.
Good people
it is Noteworthy that the majority of defectors living in the Soviet Union, was not disappointed in your choice. Until 1946, Annabel Bucar worked as a young clerk in the American Embassy in Moscow. Eventually she married the famous Soviet Opera singer Konstantin Lapshin, and then said that he wants to break with the US, remained to live in the Soviet Union.
